DVD review: Acts of Death (2007)

Baxter University´s Theater Group has a secret club that "initiates" young  freshmen girls. When one initiation gets out of hand, a beautiful actress is left to die. Too scared to confess their crime, the groupet away with the murder. But the next night, when the group stays late for rehearsal, it becomes apparent that someone wants them to pay for their actions. How many will die before the final curtain comes down on these acts of death? Acts of Death is written by Erik F. Hill, Bill Vincent and Jeff Burton who also is the director. The acting ranges from bad to decent, I did enjoy seeing Reggie Bannister as the character Gus. the plot is pretty decent, not particulary original but decent. The camerawork and editing is pretty good, the setting is good but in my opinion not used to full effect. Acts of Death never manages to create any real tension or dread.
There is gore, and they give us both some decent practical make-up fx and some bad computer gendered gore (a body split in two by the waist) so I wouldn´t recommend this to gorehounds. In the T & A department there is only a brief topless nudity from Caitlin Cauchy which is a bit of a shame as there are several attractive actresses in Acts of Death, for instance both Niki Huey and Erin Scheiner are stunningly gorgeous.
This review is based upon the region 1 DVD release from Lionsgate, please note that this movie is also known as The Final Curtain.
Rating: 3½ out of 7. Acts of Death is surprisingly decent,  it isn´t by far the best or the most original slasher but it´s definitely not the worst. A word of advise to the filmmakers, please stay away from CGI gore if you ain´t sure that it isn´t good, don´t buy the mediocre stuff.
