DVD review: Plaguers (2008)

When a fuel-transport vessel is hijacked by a band of sexy space pirates, an alien is accidentally released. One by one the victims mutate into ravenous, demonic creatures, and the survivors must band together against the undead PLAGUERS before the unimaginable horror reaches Earth. Plaguers is written and directed by Brad Sykes. The acting is amateurish but I wasn´t expecting any awardwinning performances and neither should you. The camerawork and editing is pretty good. Thankfully they have built sets, I´ve seen a few flicks were they use CGI to create the background and it looks like shit. The soundtrack is pretty cool. It´s gory, plenty of good practical make-up fx and one of the highlights is when a character stomach is ripped open. There are also a large amount of green slime stuff as mutants don´t bleed as humans when they are hurt... The make-up fx designs for the mutants are very cool! No CGI used, it´s all latex which really admirable considering the a small budget, and the monster design is reminiscent to Lamberto Bava's Demons. There are some computer gendered visual fx, used for external views of the spacecraft and the fire of torches. On the T & A department, despite several beautiful women they all keep their clothes on for the entire duration of the film and in my opinion Plaguers needs some gratuitous nudity.

This review is based upon the region 1 DVD release from Image Entertainment.
Rating: 6½ out of 7. I like low budget sci-fi horror and if you're looking for flick in that genre, Plaguers should do the trick. Definitely recommended!
