Review: Frankenstein: Day of the Beast (2011)

First I´d like to thank Michelle Shields for making a screener available. In a foggy winter morning, a raft brings a priest to an isolated island. He is getting paid to perform a wedding ritual under very mysterious conditions. The groom is Victor Frankenstein (Adam Stephenson), and the young and beautiful bride is his cousin Elizabeth (Michelle Shields). Seven armed and dangerous mercenary soldiers have been hired to protect her against something huge that hides in the woods, awaiting for that wedding night to be consummated. Victor is the only one who knows the truth about their enemy. His secret will be paid with the life of his private army, whose men will die one by one, as the creature gets closer to his target: the bride. Frankenstein: Day of the Beast is directed by Ricardo Islas. The acting is decent overall but the main stars Michelle Shields and Adam Stephenson are both quite good as their repective character but Michelle deserves special praise for portraying a character that is both vulnerable and strong. The camerawork and editing is good and the soundtrack is excellent. The pacing is good, giving it a feeling of a horror flick spliced with action. The setting is good and used to effect creating the necessary mood. The dialogue audio on the online screener was a bit weird a few times when I was watching it, almost like some of it had been recorded in a studio and this is possibly due to some post-dubbing. There are some gore, it´s practical make-up fx which looks pretty good but this isn´t a gorefeast. The beast make-up fx design is decent. No T & A in this.
This review is based upon an online screener provided by the film makers.
Rating: 4½ out of 7. An ambitious new Frankenstein flick, I like very much that they made a period piece, made a effort to supply the cast with appropriate wardrobe and so on. I also like that the computer gendered fx is kept to a minimum. If you are a fan of the Frankenstein movies I reccomend that you check it out.
