Review: Screen (2012)

First I´d like to thank David Paul Baker for providing me with a screener.
A group of horror fans are found scared to death in front of a drive-in movie screen. Whatever they saw, also bled into their screens on their mobile devices. We go back 24 hours to follow two of the characters from this group. Lola (Nicole Alanso) & Carrie (Leslie Andrews) go on a road trip to attend this halloween screening event. It's being held at an old disused drive-in movie theatre. They also research the past reports about the drive-in. It's haunted! People died in front of the screen in the 70's. This event is the 40th anniversary of the deaths. Despite this fact, nothing will stop Lola & Carrie from attending. They want to see what is on the SCREEN. Screen is written and directed by David Paul Baker. The acting is for the most part good, a lot of the acting feels natural and I get the feeling that some of it is scripted and a lot is improvised. The camerawork and editing is good but there is quite a bit of shaky cam/pov footage. I love the derelict drive-in cinema setting and it´s used to good effect. The soundtrack is very nice!! I fear that some viewers might be put off as Screen is a slow burner, it has a long build up, but I like it. The concept is very cool, it´s a little bit reminicent of John Carpenter´s Cigarette Burns and that is a good thing in my book. There is no real gore to speak of, some aftermath shots but that´s it. There is some very brief T & A, actually you don´t see very much.
This review is based upon a passwordprotected onlinescreener provided by the director,
Rating: 6½ out of 7. Screen is proof that a indie horror flick doesn´t need tons of gore, special fx and T & A to be succesful. Did I just say that? LoL. Screen gets my recommendations.
The official release of Screen will be later this year. In the meantime, you can watch it here  (the official website) if you pledge $1 to the filmmakers campaign for his next project.
